On the Hook/Off the Hook

This week On the Hook:

I am working on the Baby River Blanket. The yarn is very soft and has a fabulous sheen.  My nephew is due in January, so this one had been pushed back. Time to get back to work!

This week Off the Hook:

I just finished the Little Munchkin Snow Hat. I really enjoyed designing this beauty! The color changes became second nature by the end. My favorite thing about this hat is the way the earflaps curve in rather than lay flat, providing extra warmth.

The pattern for the toddler size is below. Other sizes yet to come.

A note about color changes: In the striped sections, the colors alternate each stitch (except on increases). This means you will finish each stitch with the other color. The nicest thing about this is that it is easy to carry the colors as you crochet. Which means... Less ends to sew!

For help with color changes, this video on Moogly Blog is fabulous.

Little Munchkin Snow Hat - Toddler

Materials:

  • 2 skeins worsted weight yarn in two colors, A and B (I used Yarn Bee Soft Secret in Lime and Smoke)
  • 5mm, H hook
  • Pom pom maker
  • Yarn needle
Gauge:
4" x 4" = 18 stitches by 10 rows in dc

Notes:
  • ch 1 does not count.
  • The first st in each round is worked in the same st as the join of the previous row.
  • "2 dc B" means 2 double crochet with color B in the next stitch.

With A, Magic circle.

R1: ch 1. 10 dc in magic circle. Join with sl. Ch 1. (10)

R2: 2 dc A in first st, (2 dc B, 2 dc A) four times, 2 dc B in last st. Join with A to first st. ch 1. (20)

R3: dc A in first st, dc B bet the two A st, dc A in second st, (dc B, dc A bet, dc B, dc A, dc B bet, dc A) four times, dc B dc A bet, dc B. Join with A. ch 1. (30)

R4: (dc A, dc B, 2 dc A, dc B, dc A, 2 dc B) five times. Join with A. ch 1. (40)

R12 - R17: (dc A, dc B) 35 times. Join with A. ch 1. (70)
Note: To get stripes, make sure you crochet each color into the stitch with the same color from the previous row. Green into green, gray into gray.

R18: hdc A in each st around. Join with A. ch 1 with B. (70)

R19: dc B in each st around. Join with B. ch 2. (70)

Edging

Note: I worked 2 sc in the corner stitches of the earflaps.

Round 1: Work sc B around entire hat. Join.
This will be going the opposite direction as the rest of the hat.

R2: With A ch 1, turn. hdc A around. Join. ch 1.
Now your going the same way as the rest of the hat.

R3: (sc A, sc B) around. Join. Bind off.

Sew in ends.

Make and attach pom pom to top of hat.
